Operators for Operators

Operators are used to ease the specific parts of working with kubernetes. Examples of such operators are database operators, operators for Kafka, for RabbitMQ and for backup. The platform we have used operators for many things , however the case we are going to see today is a case where an operator is used for doing work at the clusterwide level and we need to be able to provide users of the platform with a self-service setup for their own backup with out having multiple tenants clashing in the cluster or the backend objects storage. A solution using velero as the underlying baackup operator and an operator operator evolved for solving the multitenancy challenges. This talk is about the operator framework, velero and the operator operator on top and the things that was discovered during the work with that operator operator.

In the recent couple of years the Platform Engineering discipline has gained quite some momentum, where goals are reducing cognitive load on developers and provide that platform functionality enabling developers.
