Discover Cloud Native community groups and events
Aachen Meetup, May 2025
Spring is finally around (or will be, when this event takes place)! We're celebrating with two great talks and a bigger venue, hoping to invite in as many of you as possible. We've seen a lot of interest in the events and are very happy to accommodate you all.
Talks
Our first talk by Tom Wieczorek, software engineer at Mirantis, will bridge the gap between Kubernetes and system administration by going into the details of how Kubernetes interfaces with the Linux kernel and low-level system configuration tools. Ever had an OS upgrade on your Kubernetes cluster go south? Then this is the talk for you!
Many companies and individuals are using cloud native software today. But how to take the next step and start contributing to them? What is this "CNCF", anyway? Our second talk by Faseela K and Marvin Beckers, two of our chapter organisers, will provide a guided introduction to the cloud native landscape and how to start contributing to it, using Istio as an example of the many projects hosted by the CNCF.
Venue Information
Food and drinks will graciously be provided by our amazing hosts at INFORM. We are looking forward to meeting everyone in person again, see you in May.
Please be aware that at the location you will first need to drop by the welcome desk and pick up a personalised visitor badge. For that purpose, we REQUIRE attendees to register through this event page and will share attendee names with INFORM to prepare said visitor badges. No other personal information other than your name will be shared.
If you would like to attend but do not consent to your name being shared with the venue, please email us at meetups@cloudnative.ac. Please note that you will then have to directly share your information with the venue at the welcome desk anyway.
Travel
The venue is at Pascalstraße 69, 52076 Aachen-Oberforstbach. Entrance is on the right side of the building. To reach by public transport, we recommend taking lines SB63 or 22 from Aachen Hbf, with returning options at the end of the event.

First Talk: "Kubernetes and the Dragons in Linux Kernel vs. Userspace Tools" by Tom Wieczorek
in-personImagine performing a routine Linux OS update on your Kubernetes cluster nodes. Boom ‒ everything breaks, and suddenly you can’t even SSH into the nodes. You instantly know it’s going to be a “fun” day. The culprit? Linux userspace system tools, developed long before containers were widespread, bring unique and often hidden compatibility issues. Kernel developers try hard not to break userland, but these low-level userland tools are often designed to be the only tool on the system for that purpose. But with containers, that premise no longer holds. Suddenly, things go south: managing kernel modules, changing network settings and all those "rock solid" and "battle tested" core facilities may break.
We'll take a look at how these challenges affect Kubernetes stability, and what k0s has done to address these issues. Understand the tricky relationship between Kubernetes, the Linux kernel, and the low-level tools we rely on ‒ and learn how to prepare for the next compatibility dragon lurking in your stack.

Second Talk: "Contributing to CNCF - The Who, How, What and Why" by Faseela K & Marvin Beckers
in-personAre you a beginner looking for help to make your first open source contribution? Or are you an experienced professional trying to dive into the world of cloud native technologies? This talk will help you demystify the process of contributing to the CNCF ecosystem. We will touch upon different options and guidelines for making contributions to various CNCF projects. The talk will cover a high-level overview of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), different options to contribute to the projects, and then will deep dive into the process by taking Istio Service Mesh as an example.
